I'm sharing in case it could give you an idea. I would probably start by introducing myself in Spanish and asking students their name. After students are correctly introducing themselves I would toss a hacky sack or foam ball in when I asked someone their name. They would respond and toss it to someone else asking their name. At this stage I would encourage the class to help if someone didn't remember how to ask or answer. After all had a chance with the ball I would introduce several students using the "his/her name is" equivalent. They could toss the ball again introducing the person who had thrown the ball to them. I would give partners/small groups magazines to find a picture (known or unknown) and "introduce" that person to the class. Then go over basic expectations and information about myself. I would then ask them to write something brief telling a person who was absent what they should know about this class. Allow anyone who wants an opportunity to share what they wrote.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16816094109435108593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7128886768755862449.post-33585629503345416192017-08-22T22:46:08.890-07:002017-08-22T22:46:08.890-07:00Block schedules are tough, especially for middle s...Block schedules are tough, especially for middle schoolers/junior high. I have worked at a middle school with 113 minute blocks and it is brutal. One thing almost every teacher in the school does is give a 5 minute "shake break" half way through the period. Students can get up, eat a snack, get a drink of water. But you need to set down the rules for what is ok and what is not, and need to make sure they know that if they waste any time coming out of the break, they lose that time from tomorrow's break. My class is generally - warm-up, short lesson, individual activity, shake break, short video or reading, partner/group work, ticket out the door (usually something like - "what is one thing you learned today?" or "write a test question for something you learned today"). Sometimes it is a little different, and that's probably too much for 90 minutes, but that gives you the idea. I teach science and history, so finding videos and activities is usually not a problem for me. Math teachers, on the other hand…Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09430434163648829750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7128886768755862449.post-84916186642613509082017-07-21T06:22:32.315-07:002017-07-21T06:22:32.315-07:00LOVE these to-the-point tips. I use one as part of how I introduce myself. Then students create them and share them with a partner. They have the option of then sharing with the class before turning them in. It's a little bit icebreaker. I get to know a little about each of them when I read them and when I see who chooses to share. They learn about a form of poetry that we use later in the year for describing and creating characters.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15038154254769079419noreply@blogger.com
